I've been fighting this battle for a few weeks now and I'm completely at a
loss to know what to do. Here's the story (in short form!):

I wanted to replace netscape-communicator-4.07 with
netscape-navigator-4.07 on my RH 5.1 system with the 2.0.36 kernel
installed.

RPM reported that communicator wasn't installed, so I manually removed all
the files from /usr/lib and /usr/bin. Repeated searches with locate and find
indicated that no trace of communicator existed on the system. Then I tried
to install navigator. RPM reported that it was already installed! It wasn't.
So I forced the installation.

Starting X and typing 'netscape' at the prompt in the xterm results in an
error message about not finding /usr/lib/netscape-communicator. And I cannot
find where this error originates.

This evening, I decided to try to uninstall all Netscape products and
start from scratch. No such luck.

When I type "rmp -e (for erase), -q (for query) or -V (for verify)
netscape-communicator/navigator", I'm told that the package is not
installed. When I try to install either one with the -i option, I'm told
that it is already installed and cannot be installed now! In summary, if I
try to install either one, I'm told that it's already installed. If I try to
verify, query or erase either one, I'm told that it's not installed.

  I re-ran /etc/cron.daily/updatedb.cron and tried 'locate netscape'.
Navigator showed up in /usr/bin and /usr/lib. Still, rpm fails to find it
and I cannot invoke it from within X.

What do I do about this? We're without a GUI browser now and I have
exhausted all my references (like the RPM book) and the local users group.

Help, please!

Rich
