Under good conditions, this should work with no problems.
Try recompiling a kernel with WD80*3 networking device support only. Disable
all of the other network cards that you don't use. This might eliminate
conflicts and potential problems. And if you have an SMC Elite 16, that's a
Western Digital WD8003/WD8013 clone, so it is the right driver. SMC Elite 16
Ultra is a similar type of ISA card with a very different chip on it.
Once you've done this, reboot with the new kernel and see what shows up in the
boot messages (and/or /var/log/messages.) If that doesn't work, try changing
the jumpers on your card--you might have it configured in a way that conflicts
with something else and the driver can't get around it.
