This would promptly bomb out because the /etc/fstab is not
correct once the drive designations change.  I think what
the gentleman needs to do is to edit /etc/fstab to be the
way its going to be, remove his drive, then reboot with
your instruction above.  Once in, he can amend /etc/lilo.conf
to reflect the new boot drive, run lilo and done.

I think having a boot disk around is handy in case of a typo...
