There is actually a FAQ on this error on the net somewhere.

I recently ran into it when compiling kernels myself.  My problem 
was that I was overclocking a amd 5x86 133 to 160 and as soon as 
I backed it down it worked fine.

However, unfortunately, a lot of the times it is not this nice or easy.

Consider turning off external cache on the bios and then trying 
again, yeah it will take longer but....

If that works then you have bad cache.

If you have access to other simms, drop those in instead of your 
current ones and try again, if that works bad simms.

Sorry to be so bleak but that is what the FAQ said.  I luckily 
escaped unscathed.

You might actually be able to get away with things on a day to day 
basis if you have bad ram or cache and you would only have to 
make changes when doing big compiles....
