Some odd problems...kdm?

I managed to get kdm to work and am able to start any and all the window
managers on my system. There are some odd problems, however, and am not
certain if they are somehow tied to kdm.

If I login as root and start kde, I can connect to my ISP with no
problems with kppp. If I login as a user, start kde and connect to my
ISP via kppp, it connects fine but then...nothing. I am unable to start
netscape, I am unable to start a terminal, nothing.

If I start Enlightenment and connect with kppp, it connects and logs on
(to all appearances) without problem but then netscape will not start.
Instead, I get this message - shortly after the log window indicates it
is starting pppd:

[patrick@localhost patrick]$ kppp
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Error: Can't open display: :0.0

Now, amazingly, this is the same sort of thing that happens if I try to
start kedit, emacs, kppp, control-panel, etc, as su under my user account:

Trying to start control-panel:

[root@localhost patrick]# control-panel
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

** WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

Trying to start kppp, emacs, kedit, etc, as su:

[root@localhost lib]# kppp
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
kppp: cannot connect to X server :0.0

What is this? I have looked at Xlib and its permissions and they are
fine. What do I have to do to correct this?

If I open up two terminal windows and use one of them to start kppp (so I
can see any messages (the message is invariably the message seen above
for kppp) I can then use the other a priori opened terminal to telnet to
my mail account (which is what I am doing now). I cannot, however, start
ANY new program once kppp has connected and I have gotten the above
message about Xlib and the display.

Help me pleeeeeze...

thank you,
patrick
