Hello all,
The onboard video card in my old Pentium is no longer a problem.
Maybe no one answered because it's a FAQ, or maybe this should be
one. Anyway, this one's for all the newbies trying to install a
new video adapter, but can't disable the old cheesy one you got in
1995 (or whenever.)
(Apologies to the veterans who knew it already...)
Crack your case and install the card.
Plug your monitor into the new card and boot up, and check /proc/pci.
Verify that your card is seen correctly. If not, find a new pci slot,
or check for jumpers on the card.
Running Xconfigurator will only get your your old chipset, so run
xf86config instead. Answer all questions as if your new card were
the only video device in the system.
When finished, hand edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file, deleting all
references to your old chipset, other Xservers (other than the one you
need) and add mode lines as you desire.
Exec startx, and if you get unexpected results, kill the server and tweak
the resource file again. Eventually you'll get what you need.

and incidentally, Packard Bell's reply was "There is no way to disable the
onboard Cirrus Logic chip. Once you install a new adapter it will be
disabled automatically. If it is not, go to Device Manager under
System Properties..." Aaaiiieeeeeeeeeeee!!!
