Kevin,
Thanks I appreciate the insight. You're right, I don't need the /usr/bin
files and although that's the way the backup script was written, I will not
extract to original locations. I have the necessary files tar'd from the
SCO Xenix but cannot extract them to Linux due to the
non-prompting/incompatibility for the next media. Linux tar with the -M
option does not recognize the archive as a multi volume set. Any ideas? I
have copied the disks to a /zenix directory on the new Linux drive, and per
a suggestion was going to try to concatenate the files together as one
archive that may allow the extract to function correctly, although it seems
like a longshot.
Sincerely,
Robert Jones

Your posted message doesn't match the Subject line, nor the included text.
SCO Xenix can't have Apache running on it as it doesn't have a TCP
stack and few SCO Xenix boxes ever had Sendmail installed on them.
They used MMDF as a default configuration.
You are correct that the tar (SCO Xenix) is very old and not fully
compatible with GNU tar. The SCO Xenix tar most likely would not be
able to extract a GNU tar created file, though it should go the
otherway.
Since you have a dialup connection, you might try instead using UUCP
to send the files or use a file transfer protocol like kermit.
Regardless, I can't imagine why you would want to tar up the /usr/bin
files as those are going to be all Xenix executables and many of them
won't run without the Xenix system (they are protected, and branded).
You should only need to backup the /appl and /mrm2 directories which
would be a lot less data...
