Are you using fvwm or afterstep?  They use CTL+cursor to switch
desktops.  If not, then which games are you playing?

My only problem is that although I've got:
    LeftAlt     Meta
    RightAlt    Meta
defined in /etc/X11/XF86Config, they don't work as Meta keys.  At
least emacs doesn't think so.  TCL/TK apps interperet them as Alt_L
and Alt_R.
