That is precisely what was driving me nuts.  Follow the instructions (for 
kdm in my case) and the result is no workie.

I think I see that now.  I actually erred.  The script changes I made to 
my .xinitrc file were not responsible for getting things going 
(sortof)...so in actuality, I guess I really don't know why, all of a 
sudden, kdm seems to work in a limited fashion.  

I found that my .xinitrc file changes did not work after killing kdm and 
logging in text means.  Upon running startx I would get error messages 
complaining about the ifelse statements.  I eliminated them, restarted 
kdm and found it still worked (sortof).
