Since others may be interested in the solution I'm posting the results.
Thanks to Jose M. Sanchez for the answer. Turns out there is no xdm
located under /usr/bin/X11. I changed the line at the bottom of inittab
to read /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm and now runlevel 5 works.

However, when I login as a normal user and perform su to get root access
I cannot open an X application such as nedit. Says something about not
getting display 0:0. I remember sometime ago the answer was posted to this
list. Can someone tell me the command to use after I su to root so that I
can run X applications? A pointer to where the answer is will be enough.
