Hey, thanks for your help. I don't understand exactly what difference it
made, but i ran Xconfigurator in expert mode (still unable to change the
card number) and get X running properly. It's running at a very low
resolution, but at least things are normal size now. 

I selected the SVGA server (which i assume it was doing on its own in
non-expert mode) and "generic monitor" with 16-bit color at 640x480 (or
whatever it is). It's still a bit too small to run Netscape (let alone
WordPerfect) comfortably, but at least it's usable. Thanks again for
your help. (I'll look into that xf86config as an alternative to
Xconfigurator.)
