Why is it RH (Red Hat) "falling all over itself"? Whether you mean it
to or not, this seems to point a finger at Red Hat as the source of the
problem. The problem lies in the version of XFree86 driver. The XSuSE
drivers are donations to XFree86 & will be in the next release.
On a slightly different front, I've found xf86config to be somewhat more
effective in getting a good X setup rather than XConfigurator.

What this sounds like is that he's ended up with the generic svga driver
in the wrong mode, and with the wrong resolution. The Trident TGUI9680
driver is entry #393 in the list of video cards. The designated driver
is the svga driver, which generally works reasonably well but often does
not have full acelleration in effect.
Before giving up on what he's got installed now, I'd suggest using xf86config
to set up X. Be sure to have the correct specs for the monitor & give it a
go.
The SuSE drivers (and be sure to get the modified xf86config program, also)
is at <http://www.suse.de/SSuSE/XSuSE_E.html>. Note that the driver may
not make too much of a difference as opposed to the better setup abilities
of xf86config: the comment on the SuSE site states that the only change in
functionality of the XFCom_Trident driver over the standard 3.3.2 XFree86
release is in adding support for the Trident 3DImage 975 AGP videocard.
