I guess I wasn't clear in that my script is a separate file called from
cron.  Sorry.

I'd suggest you put your expect script in a separate file and write an
"ordinary" shell script which calls expect with the expect script file as
parameter (I have never used expect, so I can't help you with the syntax
there). In theory that should work.
