From the research I've done on DVD (I was originally going to get one when
I built my box), DVD support for Linux is going to be a long time in
coming. While conceptually, support for such drives that support DVD-RAM
for example isn't difficult, across the board support for DVD stuff won't
come soon. All standards things aside, entertainment moguls are
supposedly releasing copies of movies that will only work in certain
geographic regions - ie your DVD drive (or card that does the MPEG stuff)
was made on the east coast and thus will read only movies encoded for the
east coast. I can't validate that and it would seem silly to me to do
that, since I'm liable to buy hardware from California over the Internet
(and I live in PA). But it would strike me as something the entertainment
business would do - require some sort of localization chip to make
something work. I guess that all really does boil down to standards -
until something becomes standard, its hard to offer more than proprietary
support fo it.
Feel free to correct me - I'm in no way an expert on this and perhaps I
just ran across someone's FUD about this whole subject when I was
researching the viability of getting DVD hardware support when I was
building my Linux box.
