This is purely guesswork,
maybe you are experiencing some kind of corruption with the utmp file?
Perform a 'man utmp' to check out possible library incompatibilities.
Perhaps you are using some older software that doesn't conform to the =
new
structure found in more recent libraries.
Use the 'last -f /var/run/utmp' command to see if you receive similar =
errors.

We have seen this problem intermittently as well. We are running RH5.0 =
and
we have seen this happen with kernel 2.0.32 and 2.0.35, so my guess is =
that
it is not a kernel problem. I have posted this exact problem here =
before,
and never got any responses. Usually a reboot fixes it temporarily, but =
it
eventually comes back. ps -aux works fine, and we have not seen this =
error
with any other program. We know (at least from the output of the "free"
command) that there is plenty of memory available on the system. =
Thoughts????
