named is a DNS daemon. It resolves hostnames into IP addresses. It's not
generally needed on personal workstations. There should be one running on
your company LAN or at your ISP. If you run a LAN at home that has a
full-time Internet connection, then it might be useful to run a cache-only
nameserver.
