I've never had much luck using the generic printer settings. I'd get
the same thing you are getting, so I have always set the following in
the [global] section:
printing = BSD
printcap name = /etc/printcap
load printers = yes
print command = /usr/bin/lpr -r -P %p %s
and then I specifically set each printer that I have:
[Laser]
comment = HP Laser Printer
path = /var/spool/samba
print = Laser-Text
browseable = yes
printable = yes
public = yes
writeable = yes
Each printer setting points to a printer in my /etc/printcap file.
