My NT box ran quite happily with a 1Mb Cirrus Logic 5446 for 2 years,
but then I upgraded to a Diamond V330 (4Mb, I think) and a 4Mb Orchid for
games, at the same time dumping NT4 and moving back to W95 (and forward
to Linux). For NT, I hear the Matrox Millennium II is very good.

64M is plenty. :) My father runs RedHat 5.0 on a 586 (150MHz) with 64Mb of
RAM, a cheapo graphics card, 12ms 4Gb hard drive... It's more than man
enough for the task. When I boot it into W98, I go put the kettle on. ;-)

My NT box had 32Mb and ran s-l-o-w-l-y. I added 32Mb (total=64) and it
still dawdled a bit. With 96Mb, it finally could cut it.

I have an AMD K6 233 and it's been just fine with NT, 95 and Linux. IMO,
you should go for the non-Intel option, not only on principle but for the
price ('non-Intel' usually means 'cheaper').
As for multiprocessing, both Linux and NT chop up the jobs in a
"one-for-you, one-for-me" system which means that unless your system is
very demanding even when 'idling' (i.e. not running your word processor,
graphics package, etc.) then you won't benefit from the additional
horsepower (unless you're running a server perhaps).

"Microsloth"? I've heard Microsnot, Mickeysoft, Microsnore,... I'll start
a collection. ;) Umm, I'd buy a plain old 350-400MHz K6 and a motherboard
which can take much faster chips. It's not the _cost_ of the new m/board
when the faster chips come out, it's the annoyance involved in removing
your graphics card, scsi card, sound card, etc. which does your head in.
Have you considered having one big box for both NT and Linux, and using
software such as System Commander to boot between them? (Sorry if you've
covered this already.) I leave my system in Linux mostly but that means
leaving it on overnight, & because my apartment is small I've gotten used
to feeling like I'm sleeping in the guts of a battleship. :)
