Hi everyone,

Thanks again for the advice. Especially to Jan Carlson who pointed about my
elementary beginner's mistake: I was trying to make a fs on an extended
partition. Doh! So I understand I just need to make a n(ew) l(ogical) partition
in fdisk.

I read the README.fdisk and I am now fairly clear. There are just a couple more
things that are bothering me. I need some reassurance mostly! fdisk /dev/hdb
gives:

Disk /dev/hdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 525 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot   Begin    Start      End   Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hdb1   *        1        1      261  2096451    6  DOS 16-bit >=32M
/dev/hdb2          262      262      524  2112547+   5  Extended
/dev/hdb6          384      384      512  1036161   83  Linux native
/dev/hdb7          513      513      524    96358+  82  Linux swap

But dmesg says:

hdb: [EZD] [remap 0->1] [525/255/63] hdb1 hdb2 < hdb5 hdb6 >    

and  /  is mounted on /dev/hd5. 

In other words fdisk sees hdb6 and hdb7 but dmesg sees hdb5 and hdb6.

Is this just what I should expect after deleting, with dos fdisk, a dos logical
partition? (Before I deleted the dos partition I was mounting / on /dev/hdb6.)
Or is it something to worry about?

Also after doing a v(erify) in fdisk (even after I inserted my logical
partition at 262-383, without w(riting)) it gives a warning

partition 5 has (some number) of unallocated sectors.  I suspect that this
does not matter. But I would like confirmation from someone who knows.
