Doing a re-install

I have a server that originally had RH 4.0 on it. I have upgraded each
time we've purchased newer versions, and right now it is running RH 5.0. I
plan to upgrade it to 5.1, and apply all the errata, but I've been
wondering if a fresh install rather than an upgrade would be advisable.
Any opinions?
If I were to do a fresh install, what would I need to do to maintain my
user accounts, mail spools, etc.? Are these things the type of things that
can just be backed up and then restored when the new installation was in
place? Or would this be more along the lines of asking for trouble? While
I've been managing this server, and using and learning Linux, for four or
five years, my experiences have not been all that extensive because Redhat
is so good at setting things up to run without bother from me.
