Can't shutdown my RH 5.1 Linux box!!!

Well it sounds strange but I'm not at home right now but I want the box to
check my emails and do some other work while I'm about 200 miles away, so
far no problem. Since this can be done in less than an hour each day I have
set the bios to automatically power on at a certain time and I have put
this at the end of rc.local to shut down when the job is done (I have
compiled power management into my kernel): (echo "halt" | at 22:35
>/dev/null) >& /dev/null
I added the > /dev/null stuff to get rid of this annoying mails about my
jobs being executed with /bin/bash
However at 22:35 no shutdown is performed, the box just reboots! I even
tried using "shutdown -h now" instead of halt but this didn't work either!
When I do this at home on the console it works (both halt and shutdown -h)
Can somebody please tell me what I can do to shutdown my box, shouldn't be
that difficult?!? :-)
