If you initially installed your system sans networking, your hostname
might have been plunked on the same line as the "127.0.0.1 localhost"
entry in /etc/hosts as an alias.

It seems that this sometimes confuses sendmail, so you might try
removing the system's name from the localhost line if it's there.  I've
seen the symptoms you described before, and this has fixed it.
