Are MDA and MUA locks coordinated under RHL303?

Folks at Red Hat (and anyone else who has dealt with this issue):
Are the mailbox locking mechanisms used by the mail delivery agent,
procmail, and those used by the mail user agents (mail, elm, pine;
pine especially) under Red Hat Linux 3.0.3 coordinated so that files
are actually being effectively locked during mailbox updates?
Several people in redhat-list@redhat.com have noted occurances of
corrupted mailboxes wherein one message's headers would begin "FFrom"
(with an extra "F") and the following message's headers would be begin
"rom" (missing an "F"). We at PatriotNet have also experienced this
problem. My recent experience with Qualcomm's popper makes me think
that these corrupted headers are a result of uncoordinated mailbox locks.
Can someone at Red Hat identify the lock files being used by the MUA's
and MDA under RHL303?
