Yeah, I had this same delay also. I can't remember exactly what I
did to fix it. I'd be afraid to give you any advice. Possibly check
your aliases file in /etc.

Make sure you are (as root) in /usr/src/linux when you type "make config"
or "make Xconfig" or "make menuconfig" from a term window. That's
"make xconfig" not "make Xconfig".
Good luck! I hope I haven't told you wrong..I'm new to this too and
have had some of the same problems as you.
