Help :) LILO boot Installation errors

I've tried installing Redhat 4.0/Intel (full install) a few times now, and
it seems that every time I get to the LILO boot manager section it says
that an error occured while I was installing, leaving me with the only
option of skipping the LILO installation. This error occures for every
LILO drive installation option it gives me.
I pressed ALT-F3 or ALT-F4 and the /bin/insmod program seemed to be
spouting some error about not being about to find the kernel version info,
or something along those lines. This happened when I selecteded any option
dealing with installing LILO. Without LILO I'm not sure how I can access
my Redhat 4.0 system..
[my partition setup]
Drive 1 (1 GIG)
Contains just one DOS partition on which I run Windows NT 4.0, and DOS 6.0.
Drive 2 (1 GIG)
hdb1 : contains a 500M DOS partition which I use with Windows NT 4.0
hdb2 : contains a 453M Linux partition which is root (/)
hdb3 : contains a 50M Linux partition which is /home
hdb4 : contains a 30M Linux swap partition

Notice, feel free to give me any advice on how I SHOULD partition off my
drive. I'm really new at using Linux for something other than a shell on
the Internet.
Also, I toggled hdb2 to be bootable, I figured this might be the problem,
but it didn't help.
Also, both drives and CDROM are EIDE. In DOS (before I installed Linux
and killed drive E:) they would have been :
C: (1 GIG main)
D: (500 meg)
E: (500 meg)
F: (cdrom)
Thanks, I'd be grateful for any help you could give me in this matter..
maybe this a foreshadow of things to come.. gah.. no no.
