My Colgate story (longish)

ok, we've all read about each other's Colgate upgrade stories, but i
figured that as long as there are problems encountered, they should be
reported here. here goes:

previous system: 486-66/16M, picasso installed on /dev/hdb2, with most of
the updates installed, and running kernel 2.0.0. i had installed the
g77-Ada stuff which was contributed a while back, so gcc wasn't 'stock'.

i booted the Boot Diskette, and it found my network card just fine. i
chose an NFS upgrade. i selected EVERYTHING in the package selection
section, and waited. i got the following error message 6 times:

"RPM install of <package name> failed"

(alt-F3 explained what had really happened was "Error installing package:
package install of <> failed"; at least its consistent...). This happened
for the following packages:

  gcc
  gcc-c++
  iBCS
  lilo
  popclient
  zip

i finished the install, and when prompted, i asked that LILO be installed
on a floppy. the install completed and re-booted. during boot, it got
as far as "LI" and then hung with the underscore jumping all over the
place. that's ok, i just booted with Loadlin (ok, twice; once to put my
new kernel where loadlin could find it).

here's what i found out about the package install failures, by
removing/reinstalling them:

gcc/gcc-c++: apparently this was a conflict with the g77-Ada stuff.
i removed those packages, and gcc/gcc-c++ installed
                just fine.

iBCS: when installing, got the message "unresolved symbols in
                module /lib/modules/default/misc/iBCS". i have no
idea (yet) what this is trying to tell me.

  lilo: "end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00, sector 0
open /dev/fd0: No such device or address
                 execution of script failed"
when i put a floppy in the drive and tried again,
it worked fine. i assume this is because i asked
for a lilo floppy during the upgrade. how come
you guys wont let us install the package without a floppy
                in the drive?

popclient: remove/reinstall with no problems. why did it fail before?

  zip: ditto.

next, i went to my collection of 4.0 updates, and did a 'rpm -Uvh *' to
install the lot. two problem-ettes:

rdate: as reported before, rpm think that the old package is
               newer. easy to get around.

tetex: has problems removing some non-empty directories (g-brief
and koma-script). a deinstall showed that it couldn't
               remove koma-script, fonts, g-brief, and dinbrief. i
can only assume that these are not fatal problems.

everything else was fine, and i could boot into Colgate with no problems.

now the BIG GRIPE! this is my only RANT, but IM SICK OF IT! this was
a problem with Picasso, and is still there in Colgate! here it is:

hey guys, PLEASE try to actually USE the menus you supply in your
default fvwm startups!!! this is my first foray into fvwm95, and
i find that customizing the window manager is REALLY a PAIN IN THE
A**, so all i ask is that you give us something functional. has
anybody at Red Hat actually tried to select 'Top' or 'Msgs' from
the System Utilities submenu? well? peeking at .FVWM95-errors
shows that you are invoking rxvt with the nonexistent '-font' option.
how about 'XDoom'? the error log reveals the dreaded 'game mode
indeterminate' message. after all the hard stuff you guys did to make
this distribution the best on the market, it really makes me want to
scream when i find this sort of crap; especially with the M4 config
scheme, these problems are a huge pain in the butt to fix (i still
havent tracked down where the M4-included files actually reside...).
i like the look of fvwm95, with all the cute little icons and such,
but the difficulty in customizing it will probably force me to
go back to my boring fvwm setup.

that is all. now that that's off my chest, i'll just leave with a
thank-you to all the fine folks at redhat.
