ScriptAlias problem

I'm new here and also new at getting a server ready. I am using Redhat v4
and apache. When i changed my httpd.conf file to show the path to my clients
cg-bin and uploaded it to the server, I then went in by telnet and
ScriptAlias url-path directory-filename, the server then told me bash: no
scriptalias. How do I make the server update this? I am desperate on help.
