Rob/Peter,
I just got the extensions installed and was able to bring down my
pages and make changes to the them and save them. The deal is that you
have to have the web server software run as the user www (or whoever you
have the DocumentRoot directory owned by.) There are some security issues
here and this new software doesn't seem to run as clean as the older
versions that run under SunOS or Solaris. I am running the server
extensions on a SunOS 4.1.4 machine and the extensions run suid to the
user who owns the web files. That way only the proper person who provides
the password can get in to make changes. I haven't poked around with this
new version of server extentions enough to say they won't operate like the
older versions did, but if it doesn't, it might not be practical for
sites running many virtual hosts who want to offer it as a service.
There is a security FAQ and README and I would imagine answers to those
types of questions are in there. By making sure the web server runs as
the user www and that my document root was wholly owned by www, I was able
to do just about anything I needed to. Hope this helps you out.
