I have been experiencing the same type of problems on a different
platform for the 3c509.  I went through the install and then rebuilt a
kernel, wrote my own conf.modules and wrote an append line for lilo and
then redid lilo.  I might add that it still does not work for me.  Hope
you have better luck.
