My HP drive came configured with hardware compession by default. I don't have
access to the lit for it right now, but I am pretty sure it was a dip switch
setting. Normally, I see about 175 KB/sec--on the drive with hardware
compression > 300 KB/sec. Also, the mt(1) man page mentions a compression
option.

I've been told that the hardware compression methods by different DAT drive
manufactures/models may be incompatible.
