ppp problems

Since updating to RedHat 4.0, I've been having problems with my PPP
hanging up periodically. Here is the entry from /var/log/messages:
Nov 24 15:41:07 getontheb pppd[1186]: Terminating on signal 2.
Nov 24 15:41:09 getontheb last message repeated 5 times
Nov 24 15:41:09 getontheb pppd[1186]: Modem hangup
Nov 24 15:41:09 getontheb pppd[1186]: Connection terminated.
Nov 24 15:41:09 getontheb pppd[1186]: tcgetattr: I/O error
Nov 24 15:41:09 getontheb pppd[1186]: Exit.
Nov 24 15:41:57 getontheb pppd[1214]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
I'm always running X Windows, and it's happened using fetchmail, ncftp and
netscape as far as i can remember, so I don't think it has to do with the
application. any ideas?
