I am trying to get printing going on my RH4.0 setup. I come from the
DOS/Windows world, and am doing my best to go the Linux way.
I have read the HowTo's, read Matt Welsh's book "Running Linux",
and have been struggling mightily up the unix learning curve and have
gotten to the point where I can understand and do a few things.
X-windows is not working yet (my next project) because of an up-until-now
unsupported ATI Mach64 card.
My system: 133 Meg Pentium w/32 meg RAM on a triton MB and a Brother HL6
laserprinter on the parallel port (msdos lpt1). According to the
documentation, the HL6 will emulate an HP laserjet 4
I downloaded and installed the apsfilter package, but I still can't get
good output.
As root, I can send
lptest 35 6 > /dev/lp1
and get the staircase output when I manually take the printer offline
and do a formfeed. When I do an
lpr fname
I will get multiple pages of output, all blank except for the first page,
which looks like this:
Error: /invalidfont in findfont
Operand stack:
Helvetica-Bold Helvetica-Bold
When I check the printer log, it is full with multiple entries like the
following:

The spool directory does have my file in it, and lpc indicates that there is a
daemon active, queing is active and the printer is enabled.
Any ideas what the problem is?
