If you use 'make xconfig', you will get the option to save and load your
configuration file. When you upgrade to a newer kernel with the patch
command, just load the old config file, change parts you want changed, and
re-save it for the future. You can also, of course, keep several config
files aroung which can be loaded when needed. I never checked, but I
think the 'Save and exit' option copies the loaded config file to
.config as well as saving it.
