No, I don't think so.  The modeline for 800x600 is the same regardles of
the color depth, right?  I am using "Generic 800x60 60hz Monitor".  So
it's not refresh rate or sync rate.  The modline controls pixel clokc,
sync start, sync end for vertical and horizatonal, etc. etc.  If
800x600x24bit works but not 800x600x8bit, then surely it's not the the
modeline (ie the monitor I've chosen).
