I forgot one.
I had amazing difficulty even after disabling PnP once.
I had to go into the BIOS setup and ENABLE one or more IRQ's for
ISA/Standard, thus removing that/those IRQ's from use by PCI. This
could well be your problem if PnP is actually disabled already.
The stupid thing would somehow even reenable the PnP ! Boy that was
a bummer. I'm going bald.
