Severe PAM hassles.

Aaargh.
Finally decided to "take the plunge" and upgrade our main server to RH4.0
(surely can't be worse than Slackware ;-)
Things are not good, the primary hassle being the lack of support for our
old password format! This being shadow + MD5 long password encryption.
For the time being I have blatantly hacked /bin/login to understand our
password file, so people can log in and do mail, etc. This is however
highly unsatisfactory since all other authentication will obviously fail,
and the whole purpose of PAM is defeated.
PAM-0.53 seemed promising, as in files "md5.c" etc. I tried to install
0.53, but our system really was having none of it. First some random
script in 0.53 decided to trash our existing PAM, then when we eventually
got 0.53 built and installed, we got messed around with the "dlopen() of
unix_sess" or something similar. Then, we are informed of memory errors
(with pause), some form of PAM debug mesages. All login attempts were
kicked out.
Attempts to revert PAM to its original state failed quite dismally with
all sorts of random problems. Installing pam and pamconfig rpm's with
--force didn't help much either. The emerging pam.conf was pitifully
minimal.
Ah here we are, back to PAM 0.53 again: when I try to su to myself:
unable to resolve symbol pam_sm_authenticate
error loading /usr/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so (lots of these, YES it is
there)
other unresolved symbols:
pam_sm_acct_mgmt
pam_sm_chauthtok
pam_sm_open_session
Is there a PAM-0.53 rpm available? Or any other painless way of enabling
shadow+MD5 passwords? I'd like to give PAM a chance, but an install of
shadow is fast approaching...
