In order to get feedback from users, I am releasing a beta version of
the Red Hat Software Printtool. This tool is used to setup local and
remote print queues. The previous version was admitly simplistic, so
I've tried to add some sorely needed features:
- ability to print both PostScript and ASCII test pages
- print filter is "magic" sensitive - print a dvi and it is converted as
needed. Currently this depends upon having the proper conversion
tools installed. If you have
ghostscript
netpbm
tetex
libgr-progs
installed on your Red Hat system, then the supplied filters will work fine.
- Ghostscript configuration is now human-legible. Pick your printer by
printer model instead of ghostscript internal driver name.
What would really help is for everyone to send me (msf@redhat.com) their
experiences with the new printtool. I would prefer responses from people
who have printing currently working - if you haven't been able to
get your printer configured with the old tool please contact Red Hat support.
If you find a given ghostscript driver works for your printer model,
please send me the EXACT printer model you own and the settings which
worked. I will feed this information back into printtool before its
final release.
