Anyone using Qualcomm's popper 2.2?

We've been having some *major* performance problems because of the
ungodly amount of memory in.ipop3d uses for serving users with large
(>1M) mailboxes. In an attempt to alleviate some of strain on the
system, we've installed Qualcomm's "popper" POP3 server, version 2.2,
obtained from ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com/quest/unix/server/popper.
In order to get popper to work, I had to make /var/spool/mail world
writable. Has anyone else installed popper? Did it require a world
writable /var/spool/mail? If not, could someone offer some advice on
configuring and compiling popper so that /var/spool/mail doesn't have
to be world writable?
