As a relative newcomer to Linux myself (who has nevertheless bought &
installed every RedHat distribution since the first), I would buy the
RedHat-4.0 CD & reinstall. If your system & application (& data) files
are not on separate (sets of) filesystems that would make it easy to sweep
the old os filesystems clean while leaving the applications & data intact,
I would buy the CD & upgrade. The new kernel uses more modules than
the former & simply upgrading the kernel might leave you with a lot of
loose ends. You will have enough in any case.
