PPP clients causing _SLOW_ performance

Hi there,
We have a number of PPP clients that are causing problems to our PPP server
running RH 3.0 when they haven't configured their PPP/SLIP client software
correctly. The main culprit are those running Win9x & NT. They get through
the login process and then when they run my PPP server script they cause the
machine to slow down so much that all other users' performance is
compromised. The client side shows the problem stage to be during "network
negotiation". the problem actually persists for close to 5 minutes after the
user hangs up too, which is unacceptable.
I am looking for a way to instantaneously cut off processes that cause
performance problems like this. Obviously the client side needs to be
configured correctly, but is there a way to cut off users with incorrect
settings? I guess my question is whether there is a way to notice that the
incorrect settings are being tried during the ppp-server-script and then
dump the port? I have tried a small c program that is a hack of the ping
program used during my ppp-server-script, but as the user hasn't yet
recieved an IP address they are unpingable and so this does not work. Has
anyone else had similar problems? I am also wondering if I used Samba if
they would then at least get a solid net connect and save my performance. I
have thought that there must be a way to make pppd give up after a certain
amount of time, but the man page does not have info on this.
This is running on a 486dx4 120 with 32MB, AHA151x adapter, Quantum 4.3 GB
HD and a BOCA BB2016 as the modem ports. We use only USR 28.8 sportster modems.
My ppp server script looks like:
pppd modem -detach silent proxyarp :208.208.xxx.xx
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
