Xpaint won't start up

Under FVWM95 under Metro-X, Xpaint fails with this helpful info:
X Error of failed request: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 14 (X_GetGeometry)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 611
Current serial number in output stream: 611
This is, of course, in addition to the customary Xpaint bitdepth warning.
Any ideas?
