I've been encountering a somewhat similar problem. The keyboard and mouse
freeze up completely, while the PC, and X windows, are still alive: Xclock
still keeps perfect time. Unfortunately, waiting doesn't seem to make
things better, and I have to do a hard reboot.

The funny thing is that this behaviour is predictable: it happens
when I switch back and forth between the X console and one of the
virtual consoles several times in quick succession (i.e., within a few
seconds).

I also assumed this is related to some sort of hardware
incompatibility between X and my machine. Does this sound right? I'm
running RH4.0, Xfree 3.1.2 with an SVGA server on an NEC Versa laptop
with a ct65545 chipset.

I've been thinking about upgrading to the new Xfree also. How much
work is it to get this development version installed and configured
(as compared to the "production" version 3.1.2.)?
