For 4.0, those who aren't willing to dig into pam should consider
it a black box as much as possible. We have attempted to configure
it such that it's set up for normal Unix authentication.
We are working with the rest of the PAM folks on writing real
PAM documentation, which will allow you to actually take advantage
of PAM's power. I wrote a few pages for the PAM system administrator's
manual this morning, and I've got a few more I've promised for the
near future.

cd /etc
pwconv5
rm -f /etc/passwd- /etc/shadow-

Nope. It transparantly uses an /etc/shadow file if it exists.
