I too am having a problem with rlogin/rsh into our Colgate box. Some
machines will always work and the others will always fail with:

'Protocol error, sw-linux-1 closed connection'

What's really strange about it is that I'm trying essentially identical
machines. One will work and the other will not. In my case, they are
SGI's running IRIX 5.3. Both on the same subnet. Both the same kind of
hardware.

The /var/log/secure shows:
Nov 18 09:29:43 sw-linux-1 in.rlogind[23886]: connect from 198.211.107.16
Nov 18 09:30:31 sw-linux-1 in.rlogind[23889]: connect from 198.211.107.20

The first one failed, the second one worked. Nothing of interest in
/var/adm/messages. Any ideas? Can I turn on some more logging? Can PAM
log the authentication information?
