Well, I'm surely no expert, but there are two O'Reilly books. 

1. Learning Perl

2. Programming Perl

  1.  gets right to the point and shows you how to start
      writing decent scripts almost immediately.  

  2. will make you (at least me) study almost each and every page and try
     to construct *your own* examples.  

Moral: For beginner (like me), try 1. before 2.
