ns ... I went and got the RedHat 4 and am not having a great deal of
ns success installing it. My first and #1 problem is that I can not get it to
ns recognize my CDROM.
Welcome to the club. There seem to be two groups out here: those for whom
the installation worked, and those [like you, me, and a number of others
who've sent me e-mail], whose systems are out in space with regard to
RH 4.0's 'boot.img' The problem is aggravated by a number of manual
references to nonexistent files and directories on [my] CDROM and what
appears to be a certain number of unidentified CDROM configurations all
named Red Hat 4.0 which may contain different subgroups of these "mystery
files."
I assume RH must have someone on the staff who used to work for Word Perfect,
but if you called WP on this you at least got the most recent material sent
to you!
I also asked this list and Red Hat how to create a 'boot.img' disk, and
got answers like: "just replace 'vmlinux' on the image with a rebuilt
kernel of your choice." BZZZT. Sorry. I was able to do this for 3.0.3
but I don't get a startup with 4.0: (1) I can't get the "ramdisk located ..."
prompt, and (2) I am prompted to insert a second disk, but have yet to find
a second disk which the boot kernel is interested in. If someone could
publish the _real_ procedure to make a 4.0 installation disk, or how to do
the installation with another type of boot disk, that would be a great
service. I am sure that my problem is complicated by working from an
a.out/Slackware/1.2.13 setup, and that is why I wanted to do a "clean"
4.0 installation. So far, it's out of my grasp.
ns I'm now stuck!!!..................
That's why my 4.0 is still in the "official" box, and not in my machine!
I am afraid of getting into a position where I can neither run the
new system nor use the CDROM to complete the installation.
ns If any of you kind souls have any suggestions or Ideas I'm all ears.
And I and several hundred others, I expect.
