LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests (ppp)

Hi,
I have upgraded the kernel to 2.x (from the RH 3.03 disk) and
updated ppp to 2.2.Of. Still everything works great except something
called LCP timing out sending config-requests. here are a few short lines
from /var/log/messages:
