'telnet localhost' or 'telnet my_hostname' yeilds:

Trying 127.0.0.1
Connected to localhost
Escape character is '^]'.

Red Hat Linux release 4.0 (Colgate)
Kernel 2.0.18 on an i586

And it just sits there. I have applied all relevant rpm updates, and I
was thinking it might have something to do with my nameserver. My
/etc/resolv.conf contains the nameserver of my ISP, and its domain. I
have tried making 127.0.0.1 as the default, and my ISP second, but no
avail. I have also tried renaming it, but still nothing.

I wouldn't think it would be this hard. I have not had this problem in
the past.

I have also added several tty's to /etc/securetty, and there is nothing in
/var/log/messages.

What do I try next?

Thanks,
Dave Wreski
