2.0.18 and Mitsumi CD-ROM

I'm one of the ones who needed Michael Johnson's bootmcd.img in
order to install RH 4.0 on CD. Worked great, but once the install
was over, my CD-ROM was no longer usable.
I tried recompiling the kernel. Disabled modules and compiled in
the MCD driver and the MCDX driver (I don't know what this last
one is, but it's Mitsumi, so I included it). With this setup I
got an error message on bootup, and no improvement in CD usage.
Tried the same compile, except that I eliminated the MCDX. Now
I get a pretty good-looking bootup message (for the first time):
mcd=0x300,11: Mitsumi status, type and version: 10 D 2 Double Speed CD ROM
but my CD still doesn't work right. The operation hasn't changed
with any of these three compiled kernels. I can read the CD at
first, but after any activity, such as changing CDs or just moving
the tray out and in, I get:
mcd: no disk in drive
mount: /dev/mcd: can't read superblock
and that's it. I never get anything else from then on.
Why is 2.0.18 having trouble with hardware that 1.2.13 could use
just fine? Anyone have any suggestions for getting my /dev/mcd
to work with 2.0.18?
Incidentally, I have almost no info about my CD-ROM at all.
The mail-order place who put my machine together included no
docs on the CD-ROM, and the company is no longer around either.
I've included in this message pretty much everything I know
about my CD-ROM hardware.
