Boot-time Interface won't work

I have a plip interface that I am trying to configure from the
control-panel. The interface works fine when I do it manually:
ifconfig plip0 remote pointopoint main up
route add main
The connection between the two machines works fine. In the netcfg
program, I go to interfaces and add a plip0 interface:
IP:192.168.1.2 (This machine)
Remote IP: 192.168.1.1 (Other machine)
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Activate at boot time:checked
I have plip compiled as a module. When I restart the machine, I see the
plip module state the port and IRQ it is using, as well as the fact that
it is plip0, then I get errors about networks being unreachable and
other stuff. Unfortunately, these errors are not put into the
/var/log/messages file. Of course ifconfig does not show the plip
interface. I can create the interface manually (as above).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
